What’s the Story?
I am excited (and challenged) at how integrated many of my projects have become. It’s not just for broadcast anymore. It’s not just for education anymore. We no longer think in linear ways, but in lateral, holistic solutions. Convergence, cross-platform and digital readiness components like blogs, apps, games and educational supplements are common additions to consider for any production, project or program. Integration of knowledge, technology and narratives are all important for ongoing success in a competitive market.
Around the time I created Texture Media, I was transitioning to work in film and television from a successful time as a career coach and adult educator. I wanted to re-access the creative spark in myself that I was often igniting in my clients. Following some excellent training in Entertainment Management, my first gig came as a writer and publicist for DOXA, Vancouver’s Documentary Film Festival. That was in 2005, the year that the fest bloomed. We filled the 1000 seat Vogue for opening night. It was a rush. My interests would then lead to producing and directing, casting and researching…
The leap from one career where I was a competent and confident leader, presenting at national conferences and integrating original curriculum, to being on the ground floor of a new industry – was one that took a lot of courage, and, I’m pleased to now say was one that has paid me back with work that aired (and has taken me) across North and South America and into several large broadcast institutions and arts organizations, and led me to work with some of the brightest lights in the field.
My work in Career Development hasn’t ended – I am a Certified Practitioner in BC. I continue to connect people with their purpose, and guide them to ignite their passions. It’s just a natural fit for me. I can see where they want to go. I use storytelling as a powerful framework for mapping this content.
My academic background is a weaving of passions and interests: a BA in Human Geography from UBC, An Advanced Certificate in Arts and Entertainment Management, a New Media Residency at the Banff Centre of the Arts, Digital Storytelling certification from Berkeley’s Centre for Digital Storytelling and Level 2 certified Artist Educator through the Royal Conservatory of Music. I’ve received mentoring in television direction from some of Canada’s best creators at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Paperny Films and the Documentary Organization of Canada.
I would be so happy to hear from you! Email or call me about any of my workshops or services.
