What’s the Story?
I am excited (and challenged) at how integrated my projects and consulting have become. It’s not just for broadcast anymore. It’s not just for education anymore. We no longer think in linear ways, but in lateral, holistic solutions. Digital readiness components like blogs, apps, games and educational supplements are essential additions to consider for any production. Knowledge integration, mastering new technology and observing the running narratives in our own lives are all important for ongoing success towards conscious decision-making in a competitive market.
Around the time I created Texture Media, I was transitioning to work in film and television from many years as and adult educator. I had attended a week-long film school which totally ignited my filmmaker’s vision and it confirmed that I wanted to work with stories in new way… After retraining in Entertainment Management, my first gig was as the publicist for DOXA, Vancouver’s Documentary Film Festival. That was in 2004, the year that the festival bloomed and we busted capacity at the 1000-seat Vogue Theatre for opening night. It was a rush!
The leap from one career where I was a confident leader, presenting at national conferences and providing guidance to hundreds of career shifters, to being on the ground floor of a new industry — was one that took a lot of courage. I can say with love that this leap was a solid choice…the industry (in all its creative chaos) has paid me back with work that aired (and has taken me) across N.America and into several large broadcast institutions and arts organizations. It has allowed me to work side by side with the brightest lights in the field – at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Paperny Films, The Vancouver Film School and at the Documentary Organization of Canada.
While I continue to work on award-winning productions, I also continue to be a Certified Development Practitioner in BC, connecting people with their purpose, and guiding them to [re]ignite their passions. I use storytelling as a powerful framework for mapping this content and developing strategies for wellness and prosperity.
My academic background is a weaving of passions and interests: a BA in Human Geography from UBC, An Advanced Certificate in Arts and Entertainment Management, a New Media Residency at the Banff Centre of the Arts, Digital Storytelling certification from Berkeley’s Centre for Digital Storytelling and Level 2 certified Artist Educator through the Royal Conservatory of Music.
